Abstract
This study aims to examine how regional neighborhood centers affect the self-rated health of Korean American older adults (N = 668) in central Florida, USA. To investigate how self-rated health is affected by spatial distributions of ethnic neighborhood centers, the individual factors such as age, gender, marital status, educational attainment, and number of years staying in the US were surveyed and analyzed. By employing spatial analysis in GIS and the spatial joining method, the records for individual respondents and ethnic neighborhood centers were linked to census data to measure the characteristics of the neighborhood of residence, such as poverty rate, proportion of older adults, and neighborhood heterogeneity of race/ethnicity. The results are as follow£ºFirst, higher education and more residence years in the US contribute to a more positive rating of health. Second, individual factors (such as gender, living arrangement, and length of stay) are the predictors of self-rated health whereas neighborhood factors showed relatively low effect on self-rated health. Third, the proportion of below poverty of neighborhood set is a significant predictor of poor (self-rated) health. Finally, the significance of the findings and some suggestions for enhancing the role of ethnic neighborhood centers are discussed.
